Coaching for Students Together with their Families
Family Skill-Building Sessions
Family Skill-Building provides focused, personalized, and intensive coaching sessions for students and their parents to develop practical executive function skills and learning strategies together.
Each session focuses on a specific area of development through direct instruction, guided practice, and real-life application. Students learn and practice new strategies, while parents learn how to coach, prompt, reinforce, and support the development of those same skills in everyday life.
By learning together, families develop a shared approach and common language that can be used long after the session is over, helping students build greater confidence, self-management, and independence.
Areas of Focus
Executive Function Foundations
Active Thinking · Attention · Perception · Awareness
Families will learn foundational executive function skills and practical strategies to support their development in everyday life. Together, students and parents will learn how to notice what is happening, use reflective questioning, think through what is needed, and determine what to do next. Parents will learn practical ways to cue and guide this thinking, helping students gradually develop the skills for independence in real-life situations.
Organization
Materials · Space · Information · Ideas
Families will develop practical systems for organizing materials, physical spaces, information, and thoughts through the implementation of strategies for creating and maintaining systems that work across home and school. Parents will learn how to provide structure, cue organization, and help students take increasing responsibility for keeping themselves and their belongings organized.
Routines, Planning & Time Management
Materials · Space · Information · Ideas
Families will develop strategies for how to set up routines, schedules, transitions, and planning together. Students develop practical strategies for managing their responsibilities, while parents learn how to provide structure, prompt thinking, respond when things don't go as planned, and gradually transfer responsibility to their child.
Learning How to Study Together
Active Studying · Note-Taking · Test Preparation
Families will learn how effective studying works and how to implement active learning strategies at home. They will develop a shared approach to studying that helps students become active and increasingly independent learners. Students learn how to study, prepare, and check their own understanding, while parents learn how to guide the process, ask effective questions, reinforce strategies, and provide support without taking over.
